A modern fuse board (or consumer unit) uses M.C.B.'s (miniature circuit breakers) or RCBOs (Residual current operated Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection)to protect the individual circuits.
M.C.B.'s or RCBOs are like switches that turn off when a circuit becomes overloaded or faulty.
Rewirable fuses are often mistakenly repaired using ordinary wire or wrong size fuse wire which could result in a fire.
When a rewirable fuse "blows" it will have to be repaired (assuming there is fuse wire to hand) which is a fiddly process
M.C.B.'s or RCBOs are reset by simply switching back on - no need to rewire them
18th edition fuse boards incorporate Single M.C.B. or RCBO's (Residual current operated Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection) which offer additional protection against electrocution on all circuits.
RCBOs provide protection by switching the current off immediately. When electrical leakage to earth exceeds as little as 30mA (thirty thousandths of one Amp),the RCBO will switch off the current within 40 milliseconds (less time than a single heartbeat), therefore turning off the electricity before you receive a harmful electric shock.
